How AI Stems Work for DJs
AI stems split a finished song back into its individual layers — usually vocals, drums, bass and everything else — using machine-learning models trained on millions of tracks. For DJs, that means you can mute the vocals to get an instrumental, solo the drums to build a groove under the next track, or grab the acapella from any song in your library.
What the AI is actually doing
A well-trained stem model listens to the finished stereo mix and predicts what each isolated instrument track "would have sounded like" before the song was mixed. It's not perfect — very dense or heavily processed tracks can leave faint bleed between stems — but on most popular music the separation is clean enough to use live.
Typical stems:
- Vocals — lead and backing vocals, harmonies, ad-libs.
- Drums — kick, snare, hats, cymbals, percussion.
- Bass — the low-end line, whether it's a bass guitar or a synth bass.
- Other — melody, chords, synths and instruments the model doesn't route to the three above.
What DJs actually do with them
- Instant instrumental version. Mute vocals — you now have a clean instrumental to bring another track's vocals in over.
- Live acapella. Solo vocals, throw them into echo, and drop into the next song.
- Long stem transitions. Bring in the drums of the next track under the current vocal, then swap the bass, then the "other," then release the vocals.
- Live mashups. Play the vocals from one song over the drums and bass of another. No pre-production.
- Cue creativity. Solo just drums to build a fill; solo just bass for a sub drop; kill drums for a breakdown feel.
How it works inside Swagg Brown DJ
- Load a track to any deck.
- Press STEMS. If the track has already been processed, stems load instantly and cost nothing. If not, you'll see a gold ⚡ Create Stems — uses X.X min button.
- Press it. The audio is uploaded temporarily to our cloud AI provider; ~30–60 seconds later the stems are ready.
- Use the V / D / B / I pad group to mute or solo any stem. Levels are click-free and update live inside the audio engine — no waiting, no swap.
Cache once, use forever. Every processed track is stored by audio fingerprint. Loading the same song later — even on a different device — shows "Stems Ready · No Processing Needed" and loads free.
Plan & usage
AI stems are included on the Pro plan ($14.99/month) with 150 processing minutes per month. Cached tracks don't count. If you run out, you can top up minutes from your dashboard.
Tips
- Pre-process the tracks in your set list ahead of time — they'll load instant during the mix.
- For house/techno, dropping just the drum stem under a new intro is often smoother than any EQ swap.
- For hip-hop, the vocal stem + a fresh instrumental is the classic mashup formula.
